As part of our ongoing desire to broaden perspectives on various issues facing the growth of golf, we thought we would publish a paper submitted by a young high school student on women in golf entitled, “Fair Way to the Fairway.”
INTRODUCTION
I have been around golf for as long as I can remember but not until the past year have I become serious about playing the game. A year ago, I enrolled in a golf academy where I started to develop proper techniques and learned to appreciate the enjoyment that golf brings. While I was at first apprehensive to play in tournaments, I managed to play in many junior events last summer and then played on my high school golf team which ultimately advanced to the State Championship. I want to continue working hard at golf and hope to play in college. I feel very fortunate that I have been introduced to the game and I am very appreciative of the women who have paved the way. I only hope I may be able to further women’s advancements in and through golf. The following essay is an abridged version of a school history paper. My thanks go to GOLF 20/20 for kindly including it in their Women in Golf Week.
